CHAPTER 31

DANI

I sit cross-legged on the couch next to Liam, resigned to the fact that my search for batteries is over. I check my phone again, and my heart jumps when I see three dots appear below my text, showing that Shane is typing. I check in with the muted television while I wait for his response.

Bill’s sleeves are only rolled up one cuff length, but outside my window, a shelf of dark gray clouds protrudes from a billowing green haze. The wall of clouds looks alive. Its movement is subtle, but steady and menacing. It has all the hallmarks of a scene in an apocalyptic movie, and I’m shocked that warnings aren’t flashing on the television screen.

Thunder rumbles, sending a vibration through the house that sounds like a low growl. The hair on the back of my neck stands up, urging me to do the same. The incoming storm is equal parts terrifying and exciting, and although part of me wants to watch it unfold, my gut is telling me I need to get Liam to safety.

I turn the television off, throw the baby bag over my shoulder and lean down to scoop up Liam so we can head to the basement when my phone vibrates. I jump to check the incoming message and find an update from the weather service.

WEATHER ALERT: Severe Thunderstorm Warning for NORTH POINT AND SURROUNDING AREAS until 7:00 P. M. A severe thunderstorm was located 5 miles west of North Point, heading southeast at 25 miles per hour. This is a dangerous storm. Prepare immediately for large hail and/or damaging winds capable of producing significant damage. People outside should move to a shelter inside a strong building and away from windows. Please check local media for additional information.
